shanghai gesture | 2010 - 2011

'Shanghai Gesture', the weaving project of Alexander van Slobbe and Joost Post, was inspired by the time of the Golden Age in the Netherlands and China.

For this project I was mainly inspired by the properties of porcelain. The surface is smooth and shiny and can reflect light in a very subtle way. I wanted to re-create this reflection in my textile. To made this textile I used transparent nylon thread in combination with a contrasting dark mohair background. The natural pattern of rice fields combined with the broken lines of Raku ceramics made it whole.

The textile was woven in Textile Museum in Tilburg. The coat was designed by Kunji Baerwald and was purchased by Museum Willet-Holthuysen in Amsterdam.
